Metric vs PG Cable Glands: How to Choose Thread Size for Enclosures
Thread selection affects panel fit, cable range, locknut matching and sourcing consistency. This guide helps buyers prepare clearer RFQs for enclosure cable entry parts.
Metric and PG Threads in Cable Gland Sourcing
Metric and PG are common thread families for cable glands and enclosure accessories. The right choice depends on the cabinet drawing, panel hole, market requirement and the cable diameter that needs to pass through the gland.
For new outdoor electrical enclosure projects, metric threads are often easier to standardize. For replacement jobs or distributor stock, PG sizes may still be requested because existing cabinets or customer specifications use them.
Do Not Choose by Thread Alone
A thread size does not fully define the gland. Buyers should also confirm cable range, material, color, locknut, O-ring and sealing requirement. For example, two M20 cable glands can have different cable clamping ranges depending on the insert design.
| Selection point | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Thread family | Metric or PG according to panel drawing and customer requirement. |
| Thread size | Match mounting hole and locknut requirement. |
| Cable outer diameter | Confirm the cable range that the gland must seal and clamp. |
| Material | PA66 nylon for standard applications or nickel-plated brass for EMC/metal requirements. |
| Accessory fit | Locknut, O-ring, reducer or blanking plug requirements. |
When Metric Threads Are a Good Fit
- New cabinet designs where the buyer can standardize thread sizes.
- Outdoor electrical enclosures using common M20, M25 or M32 gland positions.
- Projects using EMC brass cable glands for shielded cable entry.
- OEM programs that want consistent drawings and repeat purchasing.
When PG Threads May Still Be Needed
- Replacement or maintenance parts for existing panels.
- Distributor programs where customers still request PG gland sizes.
- Accessory kits that must match older enclosure drawings.
RFQ Tip
Send the thread family, thread size and cable outer diameter together. If the panel drawing is available, include it. For multi-hole glands, send each cable diameter and the required hole count.
